Realize this, and you will find strength." | Full Size | Stock Photo | Full Name: Toshiro Hitsugaya Nicknames: Toshiro, Hitsugaya (responds the same to either name), Toshi, Shiro Age: 16 Gender: Male Orientation: Straight Associated With: Exiled Human: None at this time. Magic Ability: Toshiro's power is much more broad than those of other wolves; he has control over ice and water. Period. If there is any water or ice at all within his field of vision, he has absolute control over it, with the curious limitation that controlling water causes it to freeze into ice—he has absolutely no control over that aspect of it; water that he "handles" turns to ice, period. While he can melt ice in order to shape and control it, when he relinquishes his control over it, it always turns back into ice. He is unable to put heat into water or ice at all, because, by definition, that would mean controlling it, and controlling it causes it to freeze. This can have frightening connotations, because there is water in the air, in plants, and in animals. The water in the air means that, given sufficient humidity, he is able to seemingly summon water and ice from nothing. In the same vein, he can use plants as a resource and can pull water out of them as well; alternatively, he can use his control over water to control the plants themselves. Most frighteningly of all, though he cannot dehydrate or directly control animals, he can still briefly seize control of the water in their cells, which is all he really needs. This is because any plant or animal that he takes control of in this way does freeze when he releases his control over them; however, the freezing is immediate and places the subject into suspended animation—they will wake up when they return to a normal body temperature up to three days later. Frozen tissues are brittle, however, and it is possible to kill those frozen in this manner by shattering them (in which case, they feel no pain). It is possible for him to lose control of water involuntarily if he loses consciousness; in that case, all water under his control at that time is released without freezing.
His power depends on three things: the presence of nearby water, the ambient temperature, and his personal energy reserves. The more water there is, the more powerful he is because he has more to work with. The lower the temperature, the easier it is for him to manipulate water. The more energy he has at his disposal—the better rested and better fed he is—the more water he can handle at once, the longer he can go without becoming fatigued, and the faster he can change water to ice and vice-versa. The energy drain actually occurs when the water he controls turns to ice or when he facilitates a state change of any kind, not when he manipulates actual water. The more water he controls at once, the spottier his control is; if he were to try to hold back a waterfall, for example, he could do it for a while, but brief lapses in his control would cause the waterfall to slowly freeze, starting with the water closest to him and ending with the water farthest away (i.e., from the bottom up if he is at the foot of the waterfall or from the top down if he was at the top). Because state changes are what drains his energy, lower temperatures are beneficial to him because they reduce the energy cost of freezing the water when he "drops" it. It costs him no energy at all to keep ice frozen, which is handy when you need something solid fast.
Experience has taught Toshiro that freezing water and then manipulating it is more cost-effective, allowing him to more easily "budget" his energy. Years of dedicated training have given him an extensive energy reserve, which in turn makes him very powerful and allows him to perform some fairly impressive feats... like holding back waterfalls. He actually isn't a very strong swimmer, as he simply freezes water to walk across instead.
Fur Color: White Eye Color: Blue Height: 5'2'' Weight: 720 lbs. Basic Build: Compact and lean, but well-proportioned. A certain air of power in his stride might make people think twice before messing with him, in spite of his small size. Permanent Markings: A hollow diamond on his forehead, containing a plus, and an alternating pattern of dots and vertical lines around each leg just above the hock joints. All markings are black. Other: None
Personality: Toshiro has historically been rather afraid of his own power and, by extension, of himself. This is a very deeply-buried aspect of his personality, and he would never admit to it. Even so, this fear has shaped his personality over the years. It has led to his two main goals in life: self-control, and protecting those who matter to him.
"Those who matter to him" is defined as anyone he considers to be "his" in some way; subordinates, friends, and allies. In turn, his idea of "subordinates" is any helpless individuals that happen to be in the vicinity or in his faction—the young, the sick, and the old, in general. This is where his thinking gets complicated; yes, he does believe that anyone who is "helpless" is below him on the totem pole, but no, he does not go around telling them what to do or talking down to them. In his mind, dominance is determined by ability, and dominance means that you have to protect those weaker than yourself—and no, you don't get to be an asshat to those weaker than yourself. That's just wrong.
To the outside world, Toshiro is very effective about projecting an air of stoicism, with a dash of sarcasm and irritability. It is a very, very rare thing to see him smile, and almost unheard of to hear him laugh. Deadpan and with a snarky sense of humor, he tends to create distance between himself and others, which suits him just fine. If you could force him to talk about it, he would have to admit that that is, in fact, the entire point. It's his way of keeping the outside world at arm's length, which in turn is meant to be a means of protecting them—from himself. Tomfoolery and general "idiocy" by adults is the most likely thing to get a rise out of him, though he is very difficult to stir to real anger.
About the only way to do that is to directly harm those whom he considers to be "his". Harm doesn't generally mean "make cry," either; under normal circumstances, it means "make bleed". Do that, and he will personally tear your rump off and make you eat it before he kills you. At the very least, he'll freeze you solid and break you into tiny pieces with no hope of reassembly. (Fair warning to you....) He rarely raises his voice.
Relationships are generally very slow-moving with Toshiro—it takes a very long time to really earn his trust and even longer to be able to rightfully call him a friend. As a result, he values his friends very highly; the same could be said for a human companion, if he had one. In the same vein, he is not easily intrigued by the opposite sex; appearance means little to him and personalities take a long time to judge properly; besides that, finding a mate is not high on his list of priorities and he rarely even considers the possibility. He can get along with just about everyone, as long as they can deal with his irritable, snarky manner of speaking; that is, he generally sets differences aside easily. He tolerates whining surprisingly well, as long as work still gets done, and he is naturally inclined to take up whatever slack there is (even when it might be somewhat beyond his ability). Even when it comes to enemies, Toshiro is cautious; though his suspicion is easy enough to raise, he needs actual proof that he cannot trust someone or that they are dangerous before he begins to respond to them as an enemy. He will not attack first, except when angered (see above).
Toshiro is and has always been very driven to improve in his combat skills and in his powers, believing that more skill equates to more control. This has made him a very powerful wolf for his age, and that shows in the way he moves and in the way he carries himself. In spite of his size, most wolves could tell at a glance that he would be a formidable opponent in a fight. He doesn't arbitrarily speak to humans that often—or to wolves, either, for that matter. Generally, he only initiates conversation when there is a definite topic at hand. He is not a big fan of the two nicknames others most often make up for him, Toshi and Shiro. Calling him by either name will annoy him.
Toshiro is not bothered by companionable silence; in fact, he generally enjoys it. He loves open spaces and high points, where he can see the sky, and frequently finds such places to observe sunrise or sunset (if he can find the time). He is unsure of himself around pups, knowing that he can't hold them to the same standards as adults but not knowing how else to treat them. If he were to find someone who was injured, his first instinct would be to assist them, no matter who they were; whether he actually would or not depends on who the injured party was. His intuition is unusually sharp, and his powers of observation are quite keen; he misses little, but he is not infallible.
Mother: Aida Father: Cedar Siblings: Four, all deceased. Other Significant Others: Kaite, a close friend since they were exiled. History: Like other Aurora wolves, Toshiro was born in Castle Lykos to parents who mated for love rather than simply to produce good offspring. Unfortunately, his parents' genetics mixed poorly. Of the five pitifully small, premature pups born to his mother, only Toshiro, the largest and the strongest, survived. Two of his siblings were born with no life at all in their frail bodies, the other two, both sisters, succumbed to their poorly-developed lungs. For a time, Toshiro seemed unlikely to make it himself, but even then, his immense potential was evident and he pulled through. Even then, blind and helpless, Toshiro was never bothered by cold. On the contrary, he became prone to crawling away from his mother whenever he began to feel overly warm. As their only surviving pup, Toshiro was lavished with love and attention by his parents; they meant well, but The Powers That Be apparently decided that this sort of attention would be detrimental to him, and he was removed from his parents' care at only a month old. He was placed into the care of a "trainer", a guard whose main job was to prepare older pups for their future jobs when they were placed with a human.
For Toshiro, this was in no way an improvement. He missed his parents and did not understand why he had been separated from them. On top of this, he was suddenly surrounded by pups who were much older and larger than him, all of whom were eager to test themselves—even on a smaller and relatively helpless pup like Toshiro. The trainer's wolf seemed indifferent to his plight, but an elderly female (in her twenties) who had lost her human some years previously proved to be his salvation. Hisana, who lived within the Castle and provided her services to the trainer as a caregiver for the pups, noticed that the relatively tiny white pup was having difficulty adjusting to his new environment and took him under her (literal) wing. That was where he slept every night after that, and it was Hisana who handled a good deal of his training. Though he was small she taught him to fight with the ferocity of a demon. Of course, Hisana couldn't be around all the time, and after only a month, the day came when Toshiro found himself alone and at the mercy of the other pups.
That was when Toshiro first touched the edges of his abilities. At that point, his abilities were very weak, as they usually are for very young pups. Without really thinking about it, Toshiro reached out in a desperate bid to control the world around him, and he seized on the tiny drops of water that hung in the air. Though his grip was feeble, it was enough. When the temperature of the air around them suddenly plummeted, and snow began to materialize from thin air, drifting slowly to the stone floor of the castle, the other pups scattered. Toshiro was amazed, to be honest, but what he was doing was the least of his worries.
Unsure of how he had started, Toshiro couldn't stop. Snow began to form higher and higher in the air, and farther outward in an ever-expanding circle around him. As he felt the energy drain out of him, he grew weaker; unable to move at first, and then unable to stand, Toshiro lay in his own personal winter world finally just focused on trying mot to die.
Hisana found him like that not much later, and somehow seemed to know what to do. At first, he was aware only of the pressure on his scruff as she lifted him out of his circle of snow and carried him off to a dryer and slightly warmer part of the room, though the snow followed him. Slowly, he became aware of her massive tongue, licking him, trying to wake him. Ordinarily he would protest, but, exhausted, he instead simply lay there and took it, just grateful to be alive. Vaguely, he heard her speaking to him, though he didn't catch most of what she said. Only the word she repeated the most stood out. "Hitsugaya," she called him. When he asked her about it later, she explained that the name meant Winter Lion. He didn't really understand, having never actually seen winter besides his own little snowstorm and having never heard of a lion before, but he accepted it—a name given to him by Hisana was as good as the one his parents had given him.
The next month was harder for Toshiro, as he struggled to learn to control his power, while simultaneously learning to fight, hunt, and handle the other pups, who showed him a good deal more respect since the incident. When he was three months old and finally big enough, at about the size of a large dog, Toshiro began to go on training runs with the elder pups. Mostly, these consisted of taking guard shifts with the trainer and his wolf, some were covert operations or large-scale battle war games. It was one of these training rounds that would change his life forever, and end his birth allegiance to Aurora. Oh, it was like any other covert-ops training run; basically, it was capture-the-flag in the nearby woods at midnight. It was fun. The next day, however, the news came through that all of the guards that had been on duty that night, and their wolves, were banished and had been ordered to leave Aurora by the next morning. Apparently, pups had been stolen from the castle that night; the guard assigned to their den was actually to be executed, though his wolf was to be spared and allowed to leave with the exiles. Toshiro would have ignored the news—but then, the trainer actually put each of the pups on a leash. That was unheard-of.
Though he struggled and protested, refusing to go, Hisana appeared in the doorway that the trainer was trying to lead him through. She did not approach him, only told him that if he did not go, he would die, and that everything would be alright. When he tried to question her, she turned and walked away. He called after her, but she never looked back. Reluctantly, hesitantly, a five-month-old Toshiro followed the trainer into exile.
They met up with about a hundred other wolves and guards on the outskirts of the city, and the gates closed behind them. Only then did the trainer remove the leashes from the pups, and they scattered. Toshiro didn't know about the others, but he fled to the back of the pack. If he was going to be an exile, he was going to look out for himself. There, at the back, he encountered a young female with determined eyes and a fighter's stride, who walked alone and looked back at the silhouette of the castle when she thought no one was looking. On a whim, he fell into step with her; she did nothing to discourage him, though she did not openly acknowledge him either.
For several days, they followed the rest of the exiles, walking in a sort of companionable silence. They didn't speak at all until one night, when she brought a very hungry Toshiro (a complete amateur at hunting) a carcass. "Pups need to eat," she told him blandly. He had half a mind to refuse, not wanting to look like he couldn't handle himself, but he bent his pride and thanked her, and they began a halting, yet comfortable conversation. Her name was Kaite, and her human turned out to be the man who was to be executed. Though she never said as much, Toshiro could tell in the way she avoided his eyes and danced around the topic that she blamed herself for his death, and that she would never forgive herself for it. Even at only five months old, Toshiro found that commendable. Thus began a tentative friendship.
Years marched on. The exiles found a place to call home and settled, and there was always work to do. After the long journey in each other's company, and as two of the comparatively few wolves without humans, Toshiro and Kaite simply stayed together. As time passed, they enlisted each other's services as training partners, since they lacked siblings or humans to train with. Toshiro learned a lot from Kaite, who was quite a fighter in her own right. She was able to help him to train with his abilities, though she couldn't match him in power, and she always had a trick up her proverbial sleeve. After a couple of years, they could be said to function as a pack within the larger structure of the Exiles, usually found in each other's company and staying together, yet never seeming to "step beyond" the bonds of friendship. Sixteen years after they were exiled from Aurora, the pair are still going strong, and waiting to see what the world has in store for them next.
